EasyBlock Lock Review

What Are We Looking At Here?

The EasyBlock lock is a security device that is permanently fitted to your scooter, or motorcycle. It is operated by pushing the mechanism into place, which in turn prevents the rotation of the rear wheel. It is unlocked using a key.

EasyBlock are a family run business, based in Naples – otherwise known as the scooter capital of Italy. Channelling years of experience in the motorcycle industry, they have made the EasyBlock lock one of the best-selling security devices amongst couriers and commuters.

How It's Made - EasyBlock Lock

Each individual EasyBlock lock is manufactured in Italy, and undergoes a rigorous testing method before it’s deemed suitable for commercial production. There are four stages to the process, and they are as follows:

Stage Uno: Research

Most existing scooter designs will get an overhaul every 3-5 years. When this happens, newly shaped EasyBlock locks are required to fit the new models. Alongside the dealers, the EasyBlock engineers get to work on figuring out the practicalities.

Stage Due: Prototyping

The best shape for support, aesthetics and technical aspects are all considered before a prototype of the lock is created. To accommodate different fitting points, EasyBlock sometimes design multiple prototypes to be tested before deciding on a final version.

Stage Tre: Testing & Evaluating

The locks then get fitted to the new scooters or motorcycles they are intended for. For the following week they are tested in real world situations, by riders in the community. This allows time for any faults to be highlighted that the design team may have missed. More often than not the feedback is positive, but if any alterations need to be made they will be changed, then the locks will be tested again.

Stage Quattro: Production

After the prototypes are evaluated, the most suitable lock design will be chosen for production. This will be the most practical and secure version – tested and tuned to be the most dependable. Prototyping to production can take as little as four weeks, but each EasyBlock lock must meet the safety standards and strict quality control policies that the company have in place before it is available for commercial use.

Pros

1. Easy To Fit – With just a hex key, a socket wrench and two sockets (14mm & 10mm), I was able to fit my EasyBlock lock in less than half an hour. And I’m not particularly good with tools!

2. Quick To Operate – Simply push the locking mechanism in using your foot to lock the device, and unlock using one of the keys provided. Hassle free, and a great time saver.

3. No Storage Required – As the EasyBlock lock is attached to the bike via the swingarm, you needn’t worry about packing it, or it getting in the way.

4. Subtle & Stylish – This lock is black and metallic, so it doesn’t ruin the appearance of your vehicle, even though it’s a permanent fixture. Simultaneously it acts as a deterrent for any potential thieves who catch a glimpse of it.

5. Well-Made & Strong – Once fitted, the EasyBlock lock sits firmly on the swingarm and I found it very reliable in its stillness. Its metal construct makes it slightly heavy, but therefore, more robust.

Cons

1. Ex-haust Guard – With the Honda PCX 125 (2017) model of the EasyBlock lock – which is the one I received – I was unable to reattach the exhaust guard to my scooter once the lock was fitted. However, I gave this feedback to the EasyBlock team who have assured me that this is a unique issue they have resolved with their recent models of lock.

2. Short Periods Only – As easy as the lock is fitted, it can be removed. If you’re leaving your motorcycle or scooter unattended for long periods of time, I would recommend using this product in conjunction with your standard chain and padlock.

So, What's The Verdict? - EasyBlock Lock

It almost goes without saying that preventing a crime from happening is infinitely better than having to sort it out afterwards. EasyBlock are helping us to do just that, by offering a solid security device, which is innovative and easy to use.

Not only does it provide the protection you need in the event of a theft, but it can also put that pesky thief off if they lay eyes on the device. For me, it’s not going to end all bike crime, but it certainly goes a long way toward preventing it.
